Redirects and cards

A ref does one of two things when scanned: redirect somewhere, or show a card. Which one depends on what you filled in.

Redirect

Put a link in the target field. From then on, scanning the ref sends the visitor straight there, with a 302. The target can be:

  • Any http:// or https:// URL, including addresses on your home network such as http://192.168.1.10/books/dune. A bare example.com/x is taken as https.
  • An app link: steam://run/440 launches a Steam game on the PC that scans; spotify:album:… opens the Spotify app; mailto: opens an email.

Links that could run code in the visitor's browser (javascript:, data:) are refused.

Card

Leave the target empty and fill in the card fields (the Card… toggle on each row): a title, a line of text, up to three links with a label each. Scanning shows a plain page with those, no redirect. Use it when one thing has several destinations: the rules PDF and the how-to-play video; the manual, the spare parts and the service number.

A ref with both a target and card fields redirects; the card is kept for when you clear the target.

Not set up yet

A ref with neither shows a "not set up yet" page. If the person scanning is you, signed in, that page has the target field: configure at the object. If the ref has no owner at all (a pre-printed pack) and the visitor is signed in, they can claim it.

Changing a target

Edit the field and save. Nobody who scanned before is affected by the old target because we never send a cacheable redirect. The change is live within seconds, everywhere.
