# shelfref > A ref is a short, public, permanent URL (https://shelfref.com/t/{id}) that redirects wherever its owner says, changeable forever. Owners print it as a QR or write it to an NFC tag and stick it on a physical thing. ## For agents curating a person's refs - The owner makes an API token at https://shelfref.com/account and gives it to you. Send it as "Authorization: Bearer srk_…". - Read the spec: https://shelfref.com/api/v1/openapi.json. Human docs: https://shelfref.com/docs/api. - A ref either redirects (field "url") or shows a card (title, text, up to 3 links). Set url to null to use the card. - Never guess ids: list them with GET /api/v1/refs. Mint new ones with POST /api/v1/refs within the owner's quota. - Rate limit: 60 requests per minute, 5 000 per day per token. Honour Retry-After. - Refs are never deleted. Do not try.
